The Martyrite Faith is worship of the Martyr Hosea and is the principle religion in the Burgue. Its followers worship a deity referred to only as "The Martyr", who is depicted as a hanged man. His monks often wear a noose around their necks as a necklace. A common prayer gesture is a circle motion around the chest. A common exclamation is "God's noose."
The religion is commonly regarded as being more conservative than the religion of Faeries, which is more accepting of homosexuality and sex in general.

Not much has been revealed in depth about the teachings and beliefs of the Martyr Faith, but it appears this universe's version of Christianity, with the Martyr figure being a stand-in for Jesus Christ (though hanged instead of crucified).
