Costin Finch was the headmaster of Light of the Martyr Foundling Home leading up to his death. From what little is shown of him he can be firm but cares for the children in his charge. His death was at the hand of Piety Breakspear's Darkasher .

History[]

In the time Philo spent living at the foundling home, Costin instilled in him the imperative that he keep secret his half-blood status and pray no one ever discovered what he was. He was one of a select few people who knew Philos secret.

It was know amongst some that he frequented the Tetterby Hotel, what was not common knowledge is that while he booked a room and two girls, the girls were not put to work but the bed was. In truth, Costin used his weekly visits to the brothel to meet with his lover Dr. Morange. The effort put in to hiding their rendezvous indicates that at least in human culture homosexuality is highly stigmatized.

Killed by the Darkasher[]

At the Light of the Martyr Foundling Home, an orphan boy named Jacob wakes from his sleep in the late hours of the night. He asks Headmaster Finch if he may use the bathroom. Just seconds after leaving the Headmaster’s office, Jacob hears a commotion. He turns around to find the Headmaster being attacked and killed by some creature. Jacob slowly approaches to find his Headmaster ripped apart. He pees on himself at the mere sight of the aftermath.[1]

Secrets revealed[]

As the investigation continues, Philo discovers Finch and Aisling Querelle were killed by the same hand, as it took both their livers. Further into his investigation, Philo learns that every Gullsday, Costin would take the night off, dress his best, and take a carriage to the Row. Master Finch would frequent the Tetterby Hotel for fae companionship. Or at least that's what he would prefer people know over the truth. While Costin did indeed visit the whore house weekly, in actuality he was there for secret rendezvous with his lover Dr. Morange. On top of being in a relationship with Costin Finch, Morange reveals that Costin also knew Aisling. They met a long time ago, before he took his vows. They were close then. He saw her perform multiple times. So, it would seem the murders were connected somehow, though Costin and Aisling hadn’t spoken in at least 20 years.[2]
